WHAT WE OFFER
Finding the right music classes for children in London takes more than picking the nearest school. The teaching method, the teacher, the group size — all of it matters more than most parents realise until they’ve tried a few places and watched a child’s enthusiasm disappear by week four.
At The Excelsis School of Music in Southgate, North London, we run beginner music classes for children and intermediate programmes for ages 0 through to 17. Piano, violin, guitar, and singing — in kids music classes London format (small groups) or one-to-one, depending on what suits your child best. Our teachers are DBS-checked, formally qualified, and genuinely good at working with children across different ages, personalities, and starting points.
We’ve been teaching music lessons for kids in North London for over 20 years. Some of our current teen students started as toddlers. That kind of continuity doesn’t happen by accident.
Looking for group piano lessons or individual music tuition? Both are available — and a free trial lesson is the easiest way to find out which works best for your child.
QUICK FACTS
OUR PROGRAMMES
👶
Musicianship classes built around movement, rhythm, and listening. No instrument required. This is where curiosity turns into something real — and it works better than most parents expect.
🎹
Instrument lessons in piano, violin, or guitar — properly structured, with real progression. By age 7 or 8 most students are reading music and working through their first exam grades.
🎸
Structured lessons with optional ABRSM or Trinity exam pathways, ensemble opportunities, and teachers who actually know how to hold a teenager’s attention — no small thing.
All programmes available as group lessons or individual tuition. View our full music programmes for timetables and availability.
HOW WE TEACH
KODÁLY & DALCROZE METHOD
We teach using Kodály and Dalcroze principles — two well-established approaches that put listening, movement, and musical understanding first. Children learn to actually hear and feel music before they’re expected to read it. The result is kids who understand what they’re playing, not just kids who can copy fingering patterns off a page.
SMALL GROUPS, REAL ATTENTION
Our kids music classes stay small deliberately. Every child still gets direct feedback from the teacher — this isn’t a classroom of 20 where your child sits at the back and gets lost. The group format also builds something individual lessons can’t: the confidence that comes from making music with other people.
EXAM PREPARATION
For children who want to work towards formal grades, we offer ABRSM and Trinity exam preparation from Grade 1 upwards. Our teachers know what examiners look for — not just technically, but in terms of presentation, nerves, and musicality. Many of our students sail through exams that others find daunting.
STUDENT CONCERTS
We run regular student concerts throughout the year. These aren’t high-pressure recitals — they’re relaxed performances where children get used to playing in front of an audience in a supportive environment. The difference in a child’s confidence after their first concert is usually obvious. Parents tend to cry. The kids act like it’s no big deal.
WHY EXCELSIS
We’ve been running music classes for children in North London for over 20 years. Some of our current teenage students started here as toddlers. That doesn’t happen unless the teaching is genuinely good and the children actually want to keep coming back.
Parents often tell us they’ve tried other music schools for children before landing here. The difference they notice most is how engaged their child is — not politely tolerating lessons, but genuinely looking forward to them. That’s what the right teacher and the right method does.
Every teacher at Excelsis is formally qualified, DBS-checked, and selected for their ability to connect with children — not just their playing ability. The two things aren’t the same, and we interview for both.
We’re based in Southgate (N14), easily reachable from Enfield, Barnet, Palmers Green, Cockfosters, Winchmore Hill, and New Southgate. Evening and weekend slots available. Meet our teaching team to see who your child would be learning from.

COMMON QUESTIONS
What age can children start music classes?
We welcome children from birth into our Babies & Toddlers musicianship classes. These run without any instrument — just rhythm, movement, and listening. Formal instrument lessons (piano, violin, guitar) typically begin around age 4 to 5, depending on the child.
How much do kids music lessons cost in London?
Group music classes for children are significantly more affordable than private lessons — you get qualified, structured tuition at a lower cost per session. Contact us directly for current pricing, as fees vary by programme and age group. A free trial lesson is available before any commitment.
Which instrument should my child learn first?
Piano is often recommended as a first instrument because it teaches melody, harmony, and rhythm simultaneously. That said, if your child is excited about violin, guitar, or singing — start with that. Enthusiasm matters more than logic at the beginning.
Are beginner music classes for children available?
Yes — all our children’s music programmes start from scratch. No prior experience needed. Students are grouped by level, so your child won’t be sitting in a class where everyone else is miles ahead. We have dedicated beginner groups for piano, violin, and guitar.
Do you prepare children for ABRSM or Trinity exams?
Yes — we offer structured preparation for both ABRSM and Trinity College London examinations from Grade 1 upwards. Exams aren’t compulsory; some families prefer to focus on musical enjoyment without the formal pathway, and that’s completely fine too.
How do I book a trial lesson for my child?
Book directly through our online trial booking or use the contact form to speak to us first. Spaces fill up — especially for younger children — so it’s worth booking early.
